ATP is used for metabolism by transporting chemical energy within cells. The molecule contains carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and three phosphorus atoms. Phosphate bonds link each of the bonds together, capturing the ATP within the bonds of the molecule. The inner membrane of the mitochondria is also involved in ATP synthesis. Known as the powerhouse of a cell, the mitochondria undergo cellular respiration to convert the simple sugar glucose into 38 ATP energy molecules.
